The 4th edition of the report shows how the EU can strengthen its international leadership on the Sustainable Development Goals
Featured among the 10 Experts’ Contributions, a proposal from Santa Chiara Lab – UniSi on how to align the European agrifood sector with the SDGs
5 December 2022 – Published today the 4th edition of the Europe Sustainable Development Report (ESDR). The publication, by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and SDSN Europe, includes the SDG Index and the dashboard monitoring the progresses of the EU, its Member States and partner countries towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
After 7 years since the international community adopted the SDGs and in the context of multiple crises, the Report shows a major setback of the progresses of the EU towards the SDGs. Based on the trends available since 2015, the EU is still on track to meet around 2/3 of the goals, but for 1/3 of them progresses are insufficient or going in the wrong direction, in particular for what concerns responsible consumption, climate and biodiversity (SDG 2-12-15). Moreover, the report highlights how the EU, through unsustainable consumption and trade, creates huge negative spillovers in the rest of the world.
In addition to the analysis of the performance of European countries on the SDGs (Italy rates 19th out of the 34 monitored countries), the report features 10 Experts’ Contributions providing precise instructions on how to strengthen the European leadership on the SDGs. One of the proposals comes from Professor Angelo Riccaboni, Co-Chair SDSN Europe, President PRIMA Foundation, Simone Cresti, Santa Chiara Lab and Manager SDSN Mediterranean, and Peter Schmidt, President NAT (Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment) section, European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), who have worked on the chapter linked to the sustainable transformation of the European agrifood sector. Their suggestion is to support especially small and medium enterprises in the field, with self-assessment tools that will help them to develop a “grammar for sustainability“.
The Report will be presented on 9 December at 14:00 CET in Berlin during the Sustainable Development Meetings at the ESCP Business School.
