On 2 – 5 December 2019, the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention and its Protocols will meet in Naples during the 21st Meeting (COP 21) convened by the Mediterranean Action Plan of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP/MAP) to review progress achieved in the protection of the marine and coastal environment of the Mediterranean Sea by addressing the themes of Marine Litter, Climate Change, Biodiversity and Blue Economy.
On the occasion, SDSN Mediterranean will participate with a side event on “Climate Action in the Mediterranean: discussing the water-food-energy nexus in a changing environment” scheduled on December 5, from 15.00 to 16:00 pm.
Simone Cresti, the SDSN MED Network Manager, will deepen the link between the agri-food sector and climate change, presenting the transformations necessary to address the environmental issues facing the Mediterranean region by underlying efforts of the Contracting Parties in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“The issues of sustainable production, transformation distribution and consumption of food are all aspects that we cannot forget if we want to address the challenges related to climate change – said Simone Cresti.
The entire sector has an enormous impact on it that we cannot underestimate. Several actors are dealing with the transformations required to adopt a new, more sustainable, fair and inclusive paradigm SDSN-MED wants to contribute to this goal, together with the institutions, networks, universities, companies and the entire civil society which SDSN –MED is already collaborating with. The meeting in Naples is the ideal occasion for revitalizing a stronger and closer cooperation.”
In the lead-up to COP21, SDSN Mediterranean has actively supported the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea, in the organization of a youth event (23 October 2019) and a regional stakeholder consultation meeting (13 November 2019) aimed at ensuring that the Mediterranean youth and stakeholders’ inputs on the Barcelona Convention will take into account.
